A Brooklyn Couple’s Transformation of a Dated Studio Into a Desert Retreat
Home Type: Studio Apartment
Location: Prospect Lefferts Garden, Brooklyn, New York
Style: Organic Modern
Bedrooms: 0
Square Feet: 529
Jordan Smith and her husband, Luke, embarked on their home-buying journey three years ago, ultimately purchasing a studio apartment that, at first glance, didn’t captivate them. Jordan humorously notes that she’s pondered over the purchase of a pair of jeans longer than it took them to decide on this 529-square-foot Brooklyn gem. Describing the home-buying process as a “whirlwind,” she highlights a critical turning point in their decision-making process: the affordability of mortgage rates compared to renting at that time.
The Search for a Perfect Space
“I thought we might be interested in buying a studio,” Jordan recalls, emphasizing how they compiled a ‘must-have’ list. This included essentials like laundry in the building and historical charm. The couple saw the apartment first but didn’t feel an instant connection. The more they explored, however, the more they began to envision their life in the sparse, dated space.
Finding Beauty in Imperfection
Their initial hesitation only deepened during the final walkthrough when Jordan spotted a “hideous beige intercom.” The thought of owning something so unappealing was daunting. Yet, those fears quickly faded as they transformed the space. Her handy father even assisted in removing the intercom, turning potential despair into delight. The studio featured delightful architectural details, like arched doorways and built-in shelves, all waiting to be revived.
Tackling Renovations Head-On
Jordan and Luke understood that their new home required a considerable amount of work. Despite the apartment’s charm, years of neglect had taken a toll. “There were years of paint caked on the windowsills and radiators, a kitchen that was functional but didn’t fit our style, one doorway that was square instead of arched, etc.,” she explains.
They dove into a comprehensive renovation process, despite knowing it would likely take longer and cost more than anticipated. The couple completely remodeled the kitchen, hiring a contractor through Block to introduce a stunning Calacatta Macchia Vecchia marble countertop and backsplash.
A Focus on Personal Style
Understanding that their space would serve as a reflection of their personalities, Jordan drew inspiration from her cherished memories of the Southwest. She and her mother visit the region annually, and the vibrant landscapes influenced their palette. “I want it to feel like we’re in the desert while ensuring it makes sense in NYC,” she says, encapsulating their vision of blending both worlds.
Reimagining Spaces and Dimensions
The bathroom received a “mini reno,” which Jordan proudly shares with enthusiasm. For about $500, they painted the walls, replaced the lights and mirror, and added a fun shower curtain, making it feel fresh and aligned with their style. The journey of selecting beautiful pieces taught them a lesson in the craftsmanship involved, especially when it came to choosing the right slab of marble.
Living in Comfort and Style
The final transformation is truly captivating. The living room showcases a cozy, inviting atmosphere with a cream sofa and patterned pillows, alongside a wooden coffee table that gives a nod to warmth amidst modern touches. A workspace, complete with a wooden desk, exudes creativity while keeping functionality at the forefront.
The kitchen transforms dramatic colors and textures, offering modernity intertwined with rustic charm via hexagonal terracotta tiles and opened shelving. “We learned a lot throughout — like the process of purchasing a slab from a stone yard; what an education!” Jordan shares, reflecting on the experience that has molded them.
Crafting a Cozy Environment
Their meticulous attention to detail is evident throughout the apartment. The walls are adorned in Benjamin Moore’s “Simply White,” providing a crisp backdrop for their curated design elements. With furniture selections from notable designers like Stickley and Design Within Reach, each piece complements the overall vibe of warmth and earthiness.
Living in the Present
In the end, Jordan and Luke found joy in their studio, transforming it from something less than loveable to a serene retreat that resonates with their lifestyle. Their story is one of perseverance, creativity, and a deep understanding of the meaning of home.
